Summary of Purple Cow-Seth Godin
Seth Godin’s book Purple Cow is simply about transforming
your business by being remarkable. With this book he states that being
remarkable is a key factor in building a business that lasts. This is a book
about why you need to put a Purple Cow into everything you build. Simply put,
this book is about the why, the what, and the how of remarkable.
You don’t need passion to create a Purple Cow. Nor do you
need an awful lot of creativity. What you need is the insight to realise that
you have no other choice but to grow your business or launch your product with
Purple Cow thinking says Seth Godin. When you read this book you constantly get
lost in your thoughts. Not because it isn’t interesting, no! It gets you
thinking of ways that you can be remarkable and doing it with confidence. It
goes without saying that creating a Purple Cow is not an easy job, but it is
worthwhile when you build your unique offering. In the words of Seth himself:
“Being safe is risky. The path to lifetime job security is to be remarkable.”
Don’t conform to the patterns of this world. Don’t let anyone tell you what you
can and cannot do. You were made to stand out.
Marketing is the act of inventing the product, the effort of
designing it, the craft of producing it, the art of pricing it and the
technique of selling it. One way to figure out a great theory is to look at
what’s working in the real world and figure out what the various successes have
in common. We have to understand that in order to be successful we don’t need a
brilliant idea, many great companies was built on a simple idea that was well
executed. We should stop being afraid of not fitting in. Consumers with needs
are more likely to respond to your offerings. Find a niche that is not being
served and figure out how you can monetize your idea.
Ideas that are remarkable are much more likely to spread
than ideas that aren’t, yet so few brave people make remarkable stuff. Now you
probably asking yourself by now why? Well Seth Godin states that many people
think the opposite of remarkable is “bad” or “mediocre” or not virus worthy.
The truth is that you have to look at your work from an objective point of
view. Put yourself in the shoes of the customer and then determine what you
would expect from your product or service. Keep in mind that compromise can
only diminish your chances of being successful.
Seth Godin’s goal of this book is to make it clear that it’s
safer to be risky-to fortify your desire to do truly amazing things. The Purple
Cow is not a cheap shortcut. It is, however, your best (perhaps only) strategy
for growth. It works but we need to understand that investing in the Cow is
even smarter than buying a Super Bowl ad. This book will give you courage to go
on an be remarkable. A definite must read for everyone.
